In order to forge a successful career at sea as a seafarer, certain personality traits are required as well as being properly trained and educated. As technology advances very quickly, the knowledge needs to be updated on regular basis This also refers to maritime jobs. With new systems applied on board ships the seafarers have to acquire new skills to operate, maintain and troubleshoot them. It goes without saying that in order to get an attractive job and to be able to keep it, one must therefore not only have the appropriate seagoing service, but also constantly update and extend their professional knowledge. This issue is reflected in the provisions of the International Convention on Requirements for the Training, Certification and Watchkeeping of Seafarers of 1978, as amended by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1995 and referred to as the STCW 78/95 Convention.
